As outlined in the Future Drought Fund (FDF) explanatory statement, “Australian farmers and their communities operate with unique, complex, and dynamic environments. As a result, diverse place-based arrangements are needed to build drought resilience that align to the unique attributes of different farming businesses, landscapes and communities”. Therefore, this project is designed to identify the adaptation challenges and contribute to the Hub strategic planning process.
Led by Dr Peter Hayman, Principal Scientist, Climate Applications with the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), the project with work with all Hub Nodes to capture a South Australian perspective on the diverse place-based needs for drought and climate resilience.
Project description:
The initial focus of the project will be on collating and documenting the physical impact of climate change on key SA Primary Industries including extensive livestock, dryland cropping, dairy, intensive viticulture and horticulture. MyClimateView, a tool funded by the Future Drought Fund, will be utilised as the primary source of information on future climates. SARDI Climate Applications will provide feedback to the MyClimateView team, and a regional perspective will be achieved through the nodes of the SA Drought Hub.
The final responsibility for adaptation lies with industries and individual farm enterprises. The role of the SA Drought Hub is to collate and provide support and information, and to identify gaps.
