Mixed Species Pastures in the Mid North High Rainfall Zone
Lead organisation: Mid North High Rainfall Zone Group
Hub members and partners involved: Trengove Consulting
Project Category: Hub Projects
Project summary:

The MNHRZ demonstrations have been established in line with their cropping trials to provide break crop opportunities, improve soil health and improve stored soil moisture. Past trials run in 2022 and 2023 have been at the MNHRZ demonstration sites at Giles Corner and Farrell Flat. These sites continue to offer a range of demonstrations for growers to visit and learn new management options and approaches with a notable focus on frost management, break crops and rotations.
This project will facilitate mixed species demonstration sites for the 2024 year to occur at the Navan and Farrell Flat sites and will allow:

  •  Comparison and quantification of the benefits of mixed species pastures for grazing and cropping enterprises.
  • Optimise pasture establishment and management as part of a cropping rotation.
  • Identification of varieties and mixes which perform in different areas of the region including medium and high rainfall areas.
  • Extension and further adoption to other producers in the region to increase awareness and adoption of tested and viable mixed species pasture options.
  • Collaboration and sharing learnings with other Groups undertaking mixed species pasture projects through Long Term Trials Projects and other investments.
