Optimising water capture, storage and utilisation in crop and pasture systems

In 2021, SA Drought Hub community consultations identified 991 community ideas for improving drought resilience, and improving soil water resilience emerged as a key theme among these ideas.

To address this priority, the Hub is scoping up a statewide project with the theme of Drought Resilient Soils. This project is seeking opportunities to further extend previous work and knowledge to help support growers to optimise water capture, storage and utilisation in crop and pasture systems.

Rather than being tied to a specific funding round, this work aims to consolidate knowledge from previous projects to identify current gaps, regional priorities, and extension opportunities across SA. The intent is to be on the front foot for upcoming funding rounds with ideas for local validation, demonstration trials, and targeted activities which drive adoption of drought resilience and preparedness strategies.

The team is connecting with growers, researchers, farming groups, and agencies to:

• Identify extension and adoption opportunities.
• Highlight knowledge gaps and unfunded priorities.
• Collate previous project outcomes and lessons learnt.

Come along to a consultation workshop to contribute your ideas to help develop a future project. Your input will help shape targeted, practical solutions to enhance drought resilience through better soil and water management.
