Reliable water supplies are critical for productive and resilient livestock enterprises, particularly during dry seasons. This project supports the demonstration and promotion of a one-hectare lined catchment constructed at Flaxman Valley, showing producers how lined catchments can increase runoff into existing dams and improve on-farm water security.
As well as constructing the demonstration site, the project is delivering extension activities including field walks, videos and communications to help producers understand the planning, construction and practical application of lined catchments. By sharing real-world experiences and lessons from the site, the project is supporting informed investment in water infrastructure that strengthens drought resilience across livestock enterprises.
Key achievements and results:
As of August 2026, the lined catchment at Flaxman Valley is now complete and operating as a practical demonstration site, giving producers the opportunity to see firsthand how lined catchments can improve rainwater harvesting and strengthen on-farm water security. The site showcases the full construction process and provides a real-world example of an infrastructure investment that can improve drought preparedness for livestock enterprises.
Interest from producers has been strong, with a well-attended field day attracting farmers, industry representatives and media to see the completed catchment in action. Feedback highlighted the value of seeing the infrastructure up close and hearing directly from those involved in the planning, construction and operation of the site.
To extend the reach of the project beyond the demonstration, a construction video and a range of communications have been developed to capture the key lessons and make them accessible to producers across South Australia.
Project progress includes:
