This project is part of the GRDC Riskwi$e program.

This project aims to provide growers and advisors with information to build resilience and knowledge across dry or early sowing. There are two core objectives:

1. Three dry seeding trials to demonstrate seed quality and decision making choices for weed control
2. Development of tool for herbicide decision making

Project description: 

This project focuses on improving farmer decision-making and risk management when dry sowing wheat and canola, particularly through better understanding of pre-emergent herbicide use and crop establishment under marginal conditions. It involves multiple trial sites, collaborative partners (University of Adelaide, Elders, Hart Field Site Group), and practical extension activities aimed at building farmer confidence and capacity. Key components of this project include:

Pre-emergent Herbicide Trials for Wheat (Roseworthy & Pinery):

• Demonstration trials assess herbicide choices under dry sowing conditions.
• Focus on crop safety and weed control effectiveness.
• Trials led by University of Adelaide and Elders, supported by Hart’s related dry sowing project.

Canola Establishment Trial (Hart Field Site):

• Explores impacts of canola seed size and low plant densities (as low as 5–10 plants/m²) on yield, weed control, and profitability.
• Aims to identify the lowest viable establishment rate under challenging conditions without compromising yield.
• Measurements include NDVI vigour, establishment, weed burden, flowering date, and yield outcomes.

Decision-Support Tool Development:

• A practical, 2–3 page fact sheet for farmers on choosing pre-emergent herbicides in cereals under different soil moisture conditions.
• Designed for quick reference, outlining crop safety risks, herbicide performance, and best practices for knife-point press wheel systems.
• Developed by Hart in consultation with University of Adelaide weed science experts.

Extension and Engagement:

• Trial results will be showcased at crop walks, field days, and events (e.g., Hart’s Getting the Crop In seminar, Elders’ field days).

• Outputs shared via websites, newsletters, social media, and regional meetings.

• Final results promoted through Hart’s 2024 Trial Results Book and GRDC RiskWi$e networks.

Impact- the project aims to:

• Help farmers reduce risks in dry sowing situations by providing evidence-based recommendations on herbicide selection and crop establishment strategies.

• Support informed decision-making and improves confidence in adopting dry sowing techniques.

• Engage both traditional farming group members and broader grower networks through accessible extension activities.
