Testing creative ways to improve farmers’ resilience and wellbeing
Lead organisation: University of South Australia
Hub members and partners involved: John Gladigau
Project Category: Hub Projects
Project summary:

This project collates drought-resilience strategies, communicates key extension messages to stakeholders, and increases adoption of resilience decision-making tools and strategies focused on improving farmers’ wellbeing.

Project description:

This project focused on improving farmer wellbeing by promoting drought resilience strategies and increasing awareness and adoption of mental health initiatives. It involved mapping existing farmer-focused wellbeing programs across Australia, fostering collaboration between them, and making this information publicly accessible online. To communicate key messages, the team developed a series of short videos and case studies, some using humour through fictional Kalmya Farm characters, which were shared on social media and at farmer workshops and events.

A key aim was to explore how different communication styles influence engagement. Using both emotive and humorous approaches, the team tested the impact of messaging on farmers’ attitudes, emotions, and behavioural intentions. Preliminary findings suggest that humorous content is more likely to be shared or discussed than traditional styles. These insights will inform future wellbeing communication strategies and demonstrate the value of using humour to connect with farmers on serious topics such as mental health.
