Designing engaging extension workshop returns to build industry capacity

SA Drought Hub is pleased to again support Ag Excellence Alliance’s professional development extension workshop, which works to upskill agricultural professionals to deliver more effective extension programs.

Due to strong demand, Ag Consulting Co will run the Designing Engaging Extension workshop again this October at Hart Field Site.

The workshop is designed for researchers, advisors and practitioners seeking to strengthen their skills in modern extension practice and support meaningful learning within the industry.

SA Drought Hub Farming Systems Specialist Rachel May said building extension capability is important to ensure research and innovation translates to practical outcomes on farms.

“Strong extension skills play a key role in ensuring knowledge transfers from research to on-farm decision making,” Ms May says.

Facilitated by Jeannette Long, the workshop will teach participants the skills needed to create learning environments that genuinely support change.

“Extension is not just about delivering information, it’s about understanding how people learn, share knowledge and apply it in their own context,” Ms May said.

Held across two days from 21 to 22 October, the interactive workshop will explore the core elements of extension and leverage tried-and-tested theories.

Participants will gain practical tools and insights, which include:

  • Understanding the essence of extension
  • Mastering the methodology for designing engaging extension programs
  • Understanding the stages of attitudinal change
  • Decision making insights
  • Grasping the impact of personality type on learning and engagement
  • Defining your target audience
  • Strategising content delivery using the KASA approach
  • Exploring a range of extension and engagement tools

The SA Drought Hub sees the workshop as a valuable opportunity for both early-career and experienced extension professionals looking to deliver more value across the sector.

“Anyone involved in supporting farmer decision-making, adoption and practice change is strongly encouraged to attend. Jeannette delivers an exceptional workshop which is engaging, practical and directly applicable, whether you’re running workshops, field days or one-on-one conversations.” said Ms May.
