Supporting the next generation of Mallee researchers

The South Australian Drought Hub is investing in regional research and extension capability through its support for Mallee Sustainable Farming’s (MSF) newest Regional Research Intern, Annabelle Naylor.

Jointly funded by the South Australian Grain Industry Trust (SAGIT) and the Hub, the internship will give Annabelle practical experience in farming systems research, extension, and resilience insights by working alongside growers, advisers and researchers across the Mallee.

Annabelle will join MSF in Loxton in February 2027 for a 14-month placement, becoming the organisation’s second intern under the program.

SA Drought Hub Director Dr Stephen Lee said supporting emerging agricultural professionals was an investment in the region’s capacity to respond to drought and seasonal variability.

“Building drought resilience requires people who understand both the science and the practical decisions growers face,” Dr Lee said.

“These internships give emerging professionals the opportunity to develop those skills in a regional setting, learning directly from farming communities while contributing to locally relevant research and extension.”
