Good seasons are an important time to prepare for the dry ones. While drought may not be front of mind for everyone right now, our work with farmers and regional communities continues to show that the foundations of drought resilience are built well before conditions turn dry.
Over recent months, we have been drawing together what we have learnt through consultations, co-design and our programs to help shape future drought investments. Central to this is understanding the decisions farmers need to make, when they make them, and where practical support can make a difference.
This ongoing work helps us plan activities around the needs of farm businesses and strengthen South Australia’s preparedness for the next drought. These insights are also being captured in our end-of-Hub report, which we look forward to sharing with you once complete.
The Hub team are continuing to deliver a wide range of extension activities and programs. In this edition, we share how our Early to Mid-Career Farmer Program is helping more than 140 participants strengthen their farm business skills across nine groups, alongside our support for emerging researchers and agricultural leaders. You’ll also find new lined catchment resources, updates on livestock water quality and the new national climate-resilient sheep systems program which is being led in SA. We also encourage you to explore the opportunities through the More Beef from Pastures 2.0 learning groups. For those working in soils, we look forward to welcoming you along to the upcoming World Soil Day event at Waite, more information is available here.
Thank you to the Hub team and our partners who continue to coordinate and deliver these Hub initiatives.
We are excited to announce that the Hub will be hosting a SA Drought Hub Showcase event, which will be held on Tuesday 29 June 2027 at the National Wine Centre, Adelaide. This event will showcase how research, demonstration, extension and partnerships support drought preparedness, practical management decisions and lasting benefits for South Australian farmers and regional communities.
Please save the date and watch out for our registration information over the coming month. This will be an opportunity for the Hub team, partners and participants to share their learnings and impact. Watch this space.
Wishing you a safe and productive harvest,
Steve
