New Goat Management Guide supports better land management decisions

The South Australian Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hub is pleased to support the release of a new goat management guide, providing practical information to help landholders make informed land management decisions.

The guide, developed by SA Arid Lands Landscape Board, highlights the impacts feral goats can have on agricultural productivity and environmental health, while providing information to support effective management and control.

Feral goats are recognised as a significant agricultural and environmental pest across many regions of South Australia. They compete directly with livestock and native animals for feed resources, can move freely through fences, and are capable of grazing preferred pasture species down to ground level.

SA Drought Hub Knowledge Broker Tony Randall said the resource provides land managers with practical information to support land management, with tactics particularly important in dry times when landscapes are stressed landscapes.

“Feral goats can place considerable pressure on available feed resources, competing directly with livestock and native wildlife,” Mr Randall said.

“This guide brings together practical information that will help landholders better understand the impacts of feral goats and make informed decisions about managing them within their farming and pastoral systems.”

Mr Randall said supporting producers with access to trusted information and practical tools was an important part of building drought resilience across regional communities.

“Good land management decisions are critical during drought and recovery periods. Resources like this help producers protect pasture resources, maintain ground cover and support the long-term productivity and sustainability of their businesses,” he said.

“The SA Drought Hub is pleased to support initiatives that provide practical, locally relevant information that can help landholders respond to seasonal challenges and improve resilience over the long term.”

The goat management guide is now available and provides practical information for landholders, producers and natural resource managers seeking to better understand and manage feral goat impacts across South Australia.
